I/A OWTS Maintenance for Low Nitrogen Septic Systems

Nitrogen pollution from outdated cesspools and septic systems has been identified as the largest single cause of degraded water quality contributing to beach closures, restrictions on shell fishing, toxic algae blooms and massive fish kills. Conventional cesspools and septic systems do nothing to treat our wastewater but rather serve as a direct conduit for untreated waste to funnel directly into our groundwater.

Hundreds of thousands of parcels in Nassau and Suffolk County are currently served by polluting cesspools and septic systems. Most of these properties will never have the opportunity to connect to a muncipal sewer system, and reversing the degradation of our water quality will therefore depend on upgrading these conventional systems to clean water septic systems known as Innovative and Alternative Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems (“I/A OWTS”).

In recognition of the importance of this issue, Nassau and Suffolk County now requires the installation of I/A OWTS systems for all new construction and major renovations. And to encourage homeowners with existing systems to upgrade their polluting system to a clean water I/A OWTS system, the County, State and several towns offer significant (tax free) financial incentives.

Grants & Rebates Available

Eligible participants can apply to three different grant and rebate programs for a combined award of up to $50,000

  • Nassau and Suffolk County – Base grant of $15,000 and additional $5,000 grant available for Low to Moderate Income households.

  • New York State – $10,000 grant

  • Town of Southampton or East Hampton – $20,000 rebate

While clean water I/A OWTS systems are essential for improving our water quality in Nassau and Suffolk County, these advanced systems require regular inspections, monitoring and professional care to properly treat wastewater. The Nassau and Suffolk County Health Department requires individuals who own property improved with an I/A OWTS system to have a yearly operations and maintenance contract in place to keep the system performing properly.

Twin Forks Septic has trained technicians certified in I/A OWTS service and we offer scheduled maintenance plans to keep your system functioning efficiently. With Twin Forks Septic, you get peace of mind and professional service from a local team that understands your system inside and out.
